For many people, the cold clear days of winter bring more than just a rosy glow to the cheeks. They also bring uncomfortable dryness to the skin of the face, hands, and feet. It’s no secret that harsh winter weather can wreak havoc on your skin, caused by bitter cold temperatures and dry air that deplete its natural moisture. But the right routine and a few key changes to your go-to habits and products can help keep both face and body skin soft, hydrated, and supple.

  1. Moisturize:

You may have found a moisturizer that works just fine in spring and summer. But as weather conditions change, so, too, should your skin care routine. Find an “ointment” moisturizer that’s oil-based, rather than water-based, as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion.

  1. Prep Your Home

The drier the air, the drier the skin. To maximize the amount of water in the air place a humidifier in the room where you spend the most time, which, in many cases, is the bedroom. A cool air humidifier increases the moisture level in the air, helping skin’s barrier stay hydrated. In addition, be sure the heat is kept on low or at a moderate temperature to avoid extra dryness in the air.

  1. Drink more water.

It may sound like a no-brainer, but a lot of us tend to skimp out on our water intake during the winter because we opt for warmer beverages like hot chocolate, cider and coffee. Remember to drink a few glasses of water and switch a few of your warm beverages for tea.

  1. Slather on the Sunscreen

Sunscreen isn’t just for summertime. Winter sun combined with snow glare can still damage your skin. Try applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your face and your hands (if they’re exposed) about 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply frequently if you stay outside a long time.

  1. Don’t take super-hot (or long) showers.

Nothing sounds better than a steaming hot shower on a cold day, but hot water is actually the enemy of dry winter skin. Too much hot water causes increased evaporation of your skin’s natural hydration. All you need is about 10 minutes.

  1. Change Your Diet

With a direct connection between the gut and skin health, increasing your daily intake of fats may help with dry skin. Consume a diet rich in walnuts, olive oil, and avocados (but not to sub them for a proper skin-care routine). Drink tons of water!

  1. Avoid Harsh Cleansers

Be sure to toss out any face washes with drying ingredients, like fragrances or additives, in favour of those with formulated chamomile or oatmeal. A really gentle cleanser is a great option that won’t strip skin of its natural oils which are needed to protect overall moisture.

The last thing raw, dehydrated, winter-worn skin needs is a harsh face peel or scrub, which can further deplete moisture and worsen irritation. If you notice flaking or redness when you exfoliate, swap in a gentler face peel formula with lactic acid or fruit acids or face scrub with round jojoba beads, which are less likely to be abrasive on skin.

  1. Switch to hydrating makeup.

There’s nothing more frustrating than seeing your makeup go on uneven thanks to dry patches or flake off midday. During cold months, replace powder makeup with cream-based formulas that contain hydrators such as glycerin and vitamin E which will nourish skin rather than dehydrate it like powders can. Look for cream formulations of foundations, concealers, blushes, and eye shadows. For lips, avoid heavy, matte lipsticks and choose tinted lip balms instead, which contain the same treatment ingredients as regular balms but are also infused with color pigment.
